Project Update!

The Pryor Leadership Program is a 3-year academic and experience-based program that includes an Outward Bound trip, volunteer and vocational internships, as well a legacy project. The Pryor Leadership program is one of the most distinctive programs on our campus. The Pryor Program is also internationally-recognized and one of the top leadership programs in the nation. Each year, the Pryor Legacy class participates in a comprehensive capstone course in which we identify, plan, and address a need within our community. This year, the Pryor Class of 2016 has selected to work with Urban Christian Academy (UCA) to share our passion for education and leadership development. In 2014, Urban Christian Academy was cofounded by a Jewell alumna in order establish a high quality, private Christian, and tuition-free education in the urban core. Urban Christian Academy seeks to provide a holistic education marked by academic excellence where students are exposed to Jesus and through Him are nurtured and inspired to become leaders in their community. In order to reach our fundraising goal, the Pryor Legacy Class hosted the following fundraisers: Campus Sand Volleyball Tournament, Panera Fundraising Night, Pryor T-Shirt Sales, UCA Sticker Sales, and individual donation requests. Through fundraisers and support from generous donors, the Pryor Legacy Class was able to surpass their fundraising goal of $10,000. Currently we have raised over $11,500 in donations. On Monday, April 18th, the Pryor Legacy Class hosted a Campus Campaign promoting awareness about UCA in support of all Kansas City urban education. Similarly, the Pryor Legacy's hosted four workdays throughout the semesters in which we invited the student body and other community members to participate in. During these workdays, the Pryor class and volunteers worked to make the playground safer and more enjoyable for the scholars. Our class moved playground equipment, built a new fence, installed a new drainage system, and laid concrete for a new basketball court. These work days also included cleaning the school building and helping to paint the new second grade classroom and reading room. We are thankful to the many volunteers who have came and supported our project including Mortar Board, BSA, and members from Greek Life. Currently the Pryor class has purchased, an Epson 730HD Projector, OfficeJet Pro Printer, Charing Stations, Wireless Typing Keyboards, 9 iPads, and 10 iPod Touches for UCA's second grade classroom. To see pictures documenting the progress, check out our Facebook Page. In the coming months, a digital scrapbook will be put together to showcase the semester of work for this project, especially highlighting the reveal of the newly renovated playground at UCA on May 4th!
